Did you know the Trustees have played host to many wonderful film locations over the years? As the Oscars are approaching, we thought it’d be fun to share our roundup of Trustees filming locations. Find a unique full-day itinerary of hiking trails, and explore Trustees properties around the state.

Greenwood Farm, Ipswich

  • “My Mother the Witch” (1983, Paine House/Greenwood Farm): An NBC Television Special.

Appleton Farms, Ipswich

  • “Ted 2” (2015, Appleton Farms): Starring Mark Wahlbergh and Seth MacFarlane.

Crane Beach / Castle Hill, Ipswich

  • “The Crucible” (Choate Island, 1996): Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, and Paul Scofield. Choate Island was used as a stand-in for colonial Salem, and the crew built the small colonial town from scratch. Daniel Day-Lewis reportedly spent two months on the island before shooting to prepare for his role. Note: Choate Island is only accessible through seasonally available boat tours, though views of the Island are accessible from Argilla Road and portions of the Dune trails.
  • “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968, Crane Beach and Myopia Hunt Club): Starring Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, and  Paul Burke. In the film, McQueen drives his dune buggy on Crane Beach, and plays polo at the Myopia Hunt Club.
  • “Coma” (1978, Crane Beach): Starring Genevieve Bujold and Michael Douglas.
  •  “The Witches of Eastwick” (1987, Castle Hill):  Starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon.  Castle Hill is used as the home of the eccentric man, and its grounds and mansion feature prominently in the film.
  • “Flowers in the Attic” (1987, Castle Hill): Starring Louise Fletcher, Victoria Tennant, and Kristy Swanson. Castle Hill featured prominently as the mansion that the family lives in for the film.
  • “My Best Friend’s Girl” (2008, Crane Beach): Starring Kate Hudson, Dane Cook, and Alec Baldwin.
  • “The Equalizer” (2014, Castle Hill): Starring Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, and Chloe Grace Mortez. Castle Hill is used for interior and exterior shots.
  • “Little Women” (2019, Castle Hill & Crane Beach): Starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet. Castle Hill is used for an estate in Paris and Crane Beach for a beach outing.
  • “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” (2009, Castle Hill and World’s End): Starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. Castle Hill is the predominant set for the film, which added several windows, statues, and columns to the grounds, as well as a circular driveway.
  • “The Tender Bar” (2021): Starring Ben Affleck and directed by George Clooney

Halibut Point, Rockport

  • “The Next Karate Kid” (1994, Crane Estate, Halibut Point).

Ravenswood Park, Gloucester

  • “The Perfect Storm” (2000, Gloucester): Filmed in town and on the harbor, Ravenswood Park overlooks the harbor, providing a birds eye view of key scenes from the film.

Moraine Farm, Beverly

  • “Hubie Halloween” (2020): Starring Adam Sandler

Fruitlands Museum, Harvard

  • “Little Women” (2019): Starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet. The Shaker Office at Fruitlands is used as Meg’s house.

Tantiusques, Sturbridge

  • “Dexter” (2020): Starring Michael C. Hall

Charles River Peninsula, Needham

  • “The River Wild” (1994, Charles River):  Starring Meryl Streep and Joseph Mazzello. Streep. The Charles River was used for some of the rafting scenes.

Bradley Estate, Canton

  • “Little Women” (2019): Starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet. Bradley Estate is used as Aunt March’s house and later Jo’s school.

Weir River Farm, Hingham

  • “The Love Guide” (2011, Weir River Farm): A comedy starring Parker Posey. The film was shot at Weir River Farm.

World’s End, Hingham

  • “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” (2009, Castle Hill and World’s End): Starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. Castle Hill is the predominant set for the film, which added several windows, statues, and columns to the grounds, as well as a circular driveway.
