World War I and II struck the Massachusetts landscape in unusual ways. Turkey Hill (Whitney and Thayer Woods Reservation) housed a Nike Missile site and munitions rail system. The shores of Martha’s Vineyard served as a bombing site for World War II pilot training. Signal Hill held a World War II radio tower. Several of our properties, Governor Ames Estate and Moose Hill Farm contain bomb shelters and survival stations, a result of the 1950’s Cold War with Russia.
