The Trustees is excited to announce branded Massachusetts license plates! Purchase a specialty plate and support our efforts to protect and preserve the irreplaceable landscapes and landmarks that make Massachusetts the place you want to call home.
Please read the FAQs before placing your order.
Pre-Order Your Plate
Who is eligible for a Trustees plate? Any Massachusetts resident with a passenger car registered in the state is eligible.
Do I have to be a Trustees Member to purchase a plate? No, but we encourage you to become a Member (or renew your Membership) to show off your specialty plate while visiting more than 120 Trustees special places across the state! Discover all the benefits of a Trustees Membership.
Can I get a specialty plate for a commercial vehicle, motorcycle, or ATV? Unfortunately, no. Only passenger car vehicles in Massachusetts are eligible for a specialty plate.
Can I put this specialty plate on a leased vehicle? Leased vehicles are not eligible to pre-order a specialty plate. However, once the pre-orders are complete, leased vehicles can get a Trustees specialty plate through the RMV. An announcement will be made when this option is available.
How much do Trustees plates cost? If you are purchasing a new plate, the cost is $40 due now. If you are swapping out plates, there will be a swap fee at the time of issuance. The swap fee may vary depending on your current plate expiration. $28 of every initial plate purchase goes directly to The Trustees.
Is there a renewal cost once I have my plate? Specialty plates need to be renewed every two years. In addition to the standard $60 registration renewal fee, a bi-annual specialty plate fee of $40 goes directly to The Trustees.
Is my plate purchase tax-deductible? Yes! $28 of the initial $40 payment is tax-deductible ($12 covers the cost of your specialty plate). In the future, your $40 bi-annual renewal fee will be fully tax-deductible and will directly help support the Trustees mission. Please consult your tax advisor regarding the tax-deductibility of these items.
Can I choose what number will be on my plate? Unfortunately, no. All specialty plates will begin with the letters “TS” and the following numbers will be randomly assigned by the RMV. There will be an auction where you can bid on low plate numbers and the coveted specialty plate, TS 1891, in honor of the year The Trustees was founded. More details about the auction and how to participate will be shared on this webpage when available.
I have Electric Vehicle plates on my car, can my Trustees specialty plate have an EV marker? The RMV cannot add EV signifiers to specialty plates.
When will I get my new Trustees plate? This is a pre-order. We must collect 3,000 applications before the RMV begins processing plates, so it may take some time. We will keep you updated on this website page.
How do I get my Trustees specialty plate? The RMV will begin manufacturing the specialty plates after 3,000 pre-orders are collected. This manufacturing will take a few months. When your plate is ready, the RMV will mail you a letter with instructions on the next steps (such as paying the plate swap fee). Once you complete those steps, the RMV will mail you your specialty plate.
Who do I contact with questions? For any questions about the Trustees License Plate—or for updates regarding where we are in the process—please contact Membership@thetrustees.org. Do NOT contact the RMV with questions about the Trustees License Plate.
Right now we are in the Pre-Order Phase, working towards collecting 3,000 applications so the RMV can begin processing plates.
