Speaking of the Future: Utopia Press

Reflecting with care upon the Transcendentalist roots of this site, this participatory art invites the community to walk the trails and consider what utopia means to them. Words become visible in the landscape with this nomadic letterpress backpack project. The backpack contains all of the tools required to create a banner. A solar oven located at the Fruitlands Farmhouse makes ink from plants foraged on the land. Phrases published in a zine by the artist appear on Tyvek banners made with the letterpress and the ink and on view throughout the site.

Artist-in-Residence Jane D. Marsching has added a banner to the grounds of Fruitlands Museum weekly since mid-July, and the display of her work, with two short films about it, will be on view through the winter. This residency project is a companion to the Recruiting for Utopia exhibition.
