Marking Day’s Passage: Highlights from the Collection features over thirty works of art from Fruitlands Museum’s permanent collection relating to our relationship with time. These paintings, archival papers, vessels, and more offer a window into how people in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries observed, commemorated, and measured their days and hours. Several of the works foreground the shifting conditions of light and weather to indicate different times of day and seasonal change. While some objects mark special occasions, others facilitate the prosaic yet comforting rituals that help form relational trust with and understanding of the world around us. The themes of visually registering the passage of time and the value of repetition connect with the Unseen Hours exhibition in the gallery nearby.
