About Landmarks & Landscapes: Birding Walk at Rocky Woods
Bird is the word!
Join us for a guided outdoor birding program where you’ll learn how to observe and identify local bird species. With six and a half miles of trails winding through 491 acres of varied terrain, Rocky Woods offers a remarkable diversity of wildlife and is an ideal destination for birding. Participants can expect a relaxed pace with frequent stops for observation. This program is suitable for both beginners and experienced birders.
About your guide:
Mike McCarthy is a Trustees volunteer who currently monitors bird nest boxes at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton, MA. He previously worked as a fish and wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and as an endangered shorebird biologist with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program and the National Park Service on Outer Cape Cod.
In addition to his involvement with The Trustees, Mike volunteers with Mass Audubon’s Coastal Breeding Bird Monitoring Program and the Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary. He also co-leads bird walks with both the Boston Nature Center and the Brookline Bird Club.
His work and volunteer efforts reflect a wide range of ecological interests, including birds, native plants, pollinators, reptiles, amphibians, and vernal pool organisms.
Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. We strongly recommend bringing bug spray, sunscreen, a water bottle, and binoculars. The birding route will be determined based on trail conditions and other factors. Please note that some Rocky Woods trails include uneven terrain and minor elevation gain. While Rocky Woods is a dog-friendly property, dogs are not permitted for this program. Recommended for ages 7 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Cancellation Policy: In the event The Trustees cancels a program due to severe weather, low enrollment, or other circumstances, we will notify registrants by email and issue a full refund or transfer to another scheduled program within two weeks of the cancellation. To cancel a reservation, please contact Rocky Woods 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations placed fewer than 7 days before the start of the program.
