About Horticulture 101: How to Plant a Tree

How to Plant a Tree: A Hands-On Workshop

Even seasoned professionals and homeowners often get tree planting wrong — leading to long-term stress or even failure of young trees. Join senior horticulturist Daniel Bouchard in this hands-on workshop and learn the most up-to-date, research-backed techniques to ensure your trees thrive for years to come.

We’ll tackle common questions like:

  • How big — and what shape — should the planting hole be?
  • Should you prune at planting time?
  • What about the burlap and wire cage?
  • Where exactly is the root flare — and why does it matter?
  • Should you add soil amendments?

This workshop includes a live, hands-on demonstration and each participant will receive a free native tree sapling (12″–18″ tall) to plant in their own landscape.

Appropriate clothing for being outside in the garden and comfortable, sturdy shoes are recommended.
