About Coastal Lecture: Impact of Coastal Acidification on Local Marine Life
Join this lecture to take a dive into understanding coastal acidification and it’s impact on local marine life. MIT Research Scientist Carolina Bastidas, will share the processes that are leading to pH changes in coastal waters, and how this compares to acidification in the open ocean. Participants will learn: what are the main drivers of coastal acidification and how do scientists study pH changes in coastal waters, and how does seawater acidity affect the vital functions of organisms. Finally, the talk will wrap up sharing what farmers, managers, the general public, and scientists are doing to improve and overcome this challenge to promote healthy coastal ecosystems.
About our speaker: Carolina Bastidas is a research scientist at MIT Sea Grant’s Marine Advisory Services group. She is a marine scientist with over fifteen years of professional experience in basic and applied research on the ecology of marine hard-bottom communities and human impacts on them. When not working to protect and educate about marine habitats, Carolina loves walking at her favorite coastal spot, Crane Beach!
