Bundle up and walk the trails of World’s End this winter, especially “Bird Alley” and “The Valley” searching for winter songs and activity. Positioned in Hingham Bay, World’s End offers an attractive green oasis for birds flying along the coast. Poor weather conditions and unfavorable fronts often force birds to make landfall which, while not so ideal for the birds, can result in spectacular birding for humans. We will leave the visitor’s kiosk at 8 and spend two hours looking and listening for resident and migrant birds. Please bring binoculars, dress in layers for the weather including appropriate footwear for potentially muddy conditions, and provide your own bug spray and water if needed.
You’ll join Sally Avery, who has been actively birding the many Trustees, Audubon, beaches, and town conservation lands in eastern Massachusetts for over 25 years. She has led countless bird walks for groups and specializes in introducing people to the satisfying hobby of birding by demonstrating proper use of equipment, field guides, and apps as an aid to identifying birds. Sally has also lectured on a variety of bird-related topics including bird vocalizations and landscaping for birds for the past 20 years.
Sally is experienced in teaching new birders how to use their equipment and find birds. As a fairly new birder in 2000, Sally discovered a Tropical Kingbird at World’s End, marking the first record of this common bird of Central American and extreme southwest US found in Massachusetts. So, if you are new to birding, don’t hesitate to join in the walks on October 9, November 13, and December 11 to see who is visiting the peninsula.
