As Chief Operating Officer of The Trustees, Nathan Hutto leads the organization’s statewide operations through a model designed to drive strategic execution and operational excellence. With a focus on long-term impact, Nathan plays a key role in aligning resources, processes, and systems to support the organization’s mission and growth.
Nathan also oversees the People Team where he leads strategies to strengthen organizational capacity, foster an inclusive and welcoming workplace culture, and position The Trustees as an employer of choice within non-profit and conservation communities. Under his leadership, the organization has undergone a comprehensive transformation of its people and culture function- elevating employee development and cultivating a culture of achievement and collaboration.
Nathan is deeply aligned with The Trustees’ mission to protect special places and connect people to those special places and has been a Trustees’ member for many years. Over the past 20 years he has enjoyed spending time with his family at Trustees’ properties hiking, trail running, camping, swimming, or just spending time in our special places. Throughout Nathan’s career, he has been dedicated to fostering inclusive work environments where colleagues feel valued, respected, and supported.
Nathan has spent years in operational and leadership roles across the social sector, including economic development, public health, education, and social services. Prior to joining The Trustees, Nathan was the Chief People Officer at LabCentral, a non-profit life sciences incubator. Nathan also served as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief People Officer at Last Mile Health, a global health non-profit that partners with governments to build and scale community health systems across Africa. Nathan brings significant international experience, including serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Turkmenistan, leading humanitarian programming in post-conflict Kosovo, and supporting operations across several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Nathan earned a PhD in Social Policy Analysis from Columbia University, where he studied disparities in maternal and child health. He also earned a Master of Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
