About Intro to the Outdoors: A Beginner’s Outdoor Exploration & Skill-Building Workshop

Ready to start your outdoor journey—but not sure where to begin? Join us for a welcoming, beginner-friendly session designed to build your confidence, comfort, and connection with the outdoors.

We’ll kick things off at Weir River Farm in our Studio classroom with an interactive workshop covering the basics: what to pack (and what not to!), how to stay safe and prepared, and tips for enjoying time outside at your own pace. You’ll become familiar with items you may want or need to help you enjoy the outdoors comfortably and safely, learn about navigation and safety, and pick up practical skills to make your next outdoor wander smoother and more enjoyable.

After, we’ll head into Whitney and Thayer Woods for a guided beginner walk. The path we’ll take is approximately 2 miles of flat ground with slight inclines for short stretches. The path is wide and the terrain is mostly dirt with small stones and gravel in sections. Along the way, we’ll pause to practice reading trail markers and maps and talking through real-life scenarios like first aid and trail safety. Frequent breaks and discussion stops make this walk a supportive, go-at-your-own-pace experience.

This program is geared towards adults who have little to no experience with the outdoors and outdoor activities. We’ll close with time for reflection and resources to help you keep exploring.

What’s included: trail maps, bug spray & sunscreen, water bottle and/or refill, snacks, and a drawstring bag if you don’t have something to carry your items in.

What to wear: We recommend wearing sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes. We will reach out to participants via email prior to the program to advise on what clothing to wear based on the weather forecast.

Come as you are, bring your curiosity, and leave with the skills—and the community—to keep exploring the outdoors with confidence!

Parking is available in the Weir River Farm lot located at 140 Turkey Hill Lane. Participants will meet at the Studio building across the street. The hike will loop through Whitney and Thayer Woods, attached to Weir River Farm, and end back at the original starting point at Weir River Farm.

Pre-registration is required for this event.

In the event of particularly inclement weather, this program may be rescheduled or cancelled. In the event of cancellation, you will be notified via the email address you used to register and refunded in full within 14 business days. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.
