About Growing Together: Fall Planting & Garden Cleanup

Prepare your garden for winter while setting the stage for a healthier, more productive spring. This lesson explores what to cut back, what to leave standing for wildlife, what, how and when to plant in fall, and simple ways to protect your soil and perennial plants through the colder months. Participants will also learn how to turn existing garden debris into nutrient-rich mulch, reducing waste while returning organic matter to the garden. This class takes a thoughtful, ecological approach to fall cleanup, working with nature rather than against it.

Growing Together is a new hands-on gardening series at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens, created in collaboration with Arianna Iappini of Birch Arbor Gardens. Designed for gardeners of all experience levels, this series invites participants to learn, connect, and cultivate alongside one another through the seasons. Each session blends practical instruction with thoughtful conversation, exploring sustainable gardening practices, seasonal rhythms, and the deeper relationships between plants, place, and people. Rooted in community and shared knowledge, Growing Together offers a welcoming space to grow skills, confidence, and connection in the historic gardens.
