Clamming at Katama Bay

About Family Style Catch and Cook with The MV Shellfish Group

Join the MV Shellfish Group and The Farm Institute for a uniquely Martha’s Vineyard summer evening spent in the water and on the Farm!

We’ll kick off the program at Katama Bay Landing, 87 Edgartown Bay Rd., with a 45 minute hands-on lesson in harvesting our own quahogs. Learn from the MV Shellfish Group how to responsibly gather these island delicacies straight from the source. No gear or experience necessary. Participants will get wet up to their waist and should wear water shoes such as crocs. Bring a towel to dry off after!

Then, we’ll head over to The Farm Institute, where the fun continues. You’ll get a chance to learn how to shuck and open your freshly harvested quahogs, then roll up your sleeves and work together to prepare delicious clam fritters using what you’ve gathered. We’ll round out the evening by harvesting ingredients for baked fries and sliced veggies from the Friendship Garden and share our meal together!

This is an adult/child partner program and children cannot be dropped off. Best geared for children ages 5 & up.

All parents/caregivers are responsible for supervising their children, especially while in the water at Katama Bay as we will be wading into the water. If your child requires a life jacket, please bring your own as we will not supply them. Participants are responsible for driving from Katama Bay Landing to the Farm Institute. A thanks to the Edgartown Shellfish Department for granting permission to harvest quahogs for this educational program from Katama Bay. Anyone can get a permit for future clamming by visiting the town’s website or the town hall. For more information about local aquaculture, please see: https://www.mvshellfishgroup.org.
