190 years ago, while sitting in the upstairs study of the Old Manse, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in Nature that “the world shall be to us an open book.” His words set the stage for many literary greats who lived and visited at the Old Manse, and who took inspiration from the landscape surrounding it.
Join us for a special linocut workshop under the tent and celebrate the intersections of literature and the natural world by creating your own bespoke bookplate to adorn your ever-growing library! Bookplates, labels used to identify the owner of a particular book, became popular in the nineteenth century and often featured elaborate, personalized illustrations along with the owner’s name. We’ll take some time to draw inspiration from the grounds and gardens of the Old Manse before creating and printing our own unique designs!
This activity involves sharp carving tools and is recommended for those aged 12 and up. Pre-Registration for this program is required. Ticket cost covers all materials needed for the activity.
