About Spotlight Pop-Up Talks: Prohibition at Home – New England Hard Cider

Discover something new with your visit through our free pop-up Spotlight Talk Series at Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens. Offered throughout the season, these 15 minute engaging talks explore a variety of rotating themes to highlight the rich history and collections found throughout the property.

Led by knowledgeable staff, each talk highlights a concentrated historic component of either the house or gardens, giving visitors a fresh perspective every time they attend. Drop in, listen, and explore—no registration required. Visitors should check in at the Garden Gateway for pop-up location.

The sale of alcohol was illegal during Prohibition in the 1920s, but not the consumption of alcohol. Many families turned to home brewing during this time, including the Coolidges. Like many New Englanders with an apple orchard, the creation of hard cider became a nifty workaround. Visitors will explore how this worked at historic properties like Stevens-Coolidge.
