In honor of Women’s History Month, step back into the early 20th century to explore a complex chapter of women’s history through the lens of Helen Stevens Coolidge and the suffragette movement. This guided tour invites visitors to examine the social and political landscape that shaped Helen’s world—a time when women across the nation were fighting for the right to vote, while others, including many women of Helen’s social circle, opposed the suffrage movement.
Participants will discover how class, tradition, and gender roles influenced perspectives on women’s rights. We will explore how Helen’s education, family ties, and position in Boston society reflected the ideals of her time—and how those ideals were both challenged and preserved amid sweeping social change. Through personal letters, period artifacts, and collection items from our archives, this guided house tour offers a nuanced look at privilege, power, and identity during a pivotal era for American women.
