Native to the New England area, Andrew Bell is a representational landscape artist painting in the medium of pastel. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Andrew initially pursued graphic design and photography. While these remain passions to this day, his interest in painting in pastel was sparked by an exhibit he saw 20 years ago. The immediacy of the medium, the vibrancy of the colors and the diversity of mark making inspired him to pursue a career in pastel painting. Where Andrew lives keeps him in daily contact with the great outdoors, his leading source for artistic inspiration. He is a lifelong summer resident of North Haven Island, Maine. When not there, he lives in Ipswich. The beaches, horse pastures, farmland and particularly salt marsh estuaries of the North Shore are captured in his landscapes. Although many of his pastel paintings are of recognizable locations, he is not concerned with generating an exact reproduction. Instead, he often works in the studio from memory, sketches and/or photographs using an intuitive process to create a heightened sense of place. Working in this fashion allows Andrew to avoid getting bogged down in details while promoting a more imaginative response to handling color and composition. Through his work he conveys nature’s incantations: whispers of wind through bows of spruce trees, the lapping of waves against a shoreline, the distant rumble of thunder. To capture the feel and temperature of weather and nature’s change in mood, he often examines the metamorphosis of daylight to dusk or calm to approaching storm. He portrays the spectrum of nature from the graceful dance of field grass to the power and fury of surf. His paintings offer the viewer the indulgence of a meditative space to contemplate the grandeur of nature and reinforce the notion that even the most solitary and tranquil moments have significance.

Born in 1939, painter/sculptor John Ashworth began appreciating art at the age of 8 upon moving to New York City, where he spent his free time visiting seminal institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as 57th Street galleries. Two years later, his own work hung with that of artists many years his senior at Washington Square Park. Exhibition attendees purchased all of his hundreds of folded, Rorschach-type blots in poster paint on typing paper pasted onto vertical scrolls. After moving back to Massachusetts, where he graduated from high school in 1956, John pursued applied industrial physics at Wentworth Institute in Boston. From there, he majored in civil engineering at Northeastern University and then attended Harvard University Graduate School of Design and, on scholarship, Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts.

Paula Borsetti creates abstract paintings that are a story of her life. Her work reflects her love of family, friends and the natural environment of New England. Working primarily in acrylic on linen and panel, she borrows colors, patterns, textures, forms and movement to create layered paintings meant to evoke personal moments and narrative. While being an art educator for almost 3 decades fed her creativity and her desire to nurture, Paula is now painting full time. “I am pouring out the past 61 years of experience every day in my studio. As residents of this shared planet, Catherine Cummings believes we are intrinsically connected—through the earth beneath our feet, the waters that sustain us, the air we breathe, and the light of the sun that touches us all. Her hope is that we each recognize the infinite perspectives from which to view the world, especially its natural beauty. Her work reflects one such perspective—her own way of seeing and honoring this extraordinary world. Her creative path began in an unexpected place: with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. Though rooted in science, this foundation deepened Catherine’s understanding of the human form and eventually led her back to her early love of drawing. She pursued formal art training at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she began working in oils, focusing on the human face and learning the language of paint. While living in Dublin, Ireland, she studied at Byrnes Art Studio under the guidance of noted artist Brian Byrnes. Over the years, she continued to refine her practice through workshops and classes in figurative and landscape painting across the U.S., Ireland, and France. Upon returning to the United States, Catherine transitioned to acrylics on wood, and her focus shifted from the figure to landscapes—expressions of the natural world’s quiet power and beauty. Painting and photography have remained lifelong passions.

Cindy loves creatively interpreting life. When she looks at something she imagines it as something else. Her process begins by making a sculpture in clay which forms the base of a new work. She places a webbed material which is knitted from silk wrapped yarn over the sculpture. Then a conversation with the piece continues back and forth until it becomes what is destined to become. It is treated with metal paints. When separated from the underlying clay what is left is a new interpretation. As a retired English teacher, Alden’s paintings are influenced by words from Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau as well as by paintings of Thomas Cole and Fairfield Porter. Thoreau stated: “We can never have enough of nature.” Landscape painting surely provides the challenges and rewards of trying to capture the scope and scale, composition and power of Nature. The attempt is simultaneously daunting and energizing; Alden looks to the land, water, and sky for both subject and inspiration.

Contemporary Impressionist painter Kathleen was born and raised in Gloucester, MA. The rich art history of the area had a strong influence on Kathleen, and she began taking drawing and painting classes at the young age of 6, and continued studying art throughout high school, college and beyond. Although her academic major was Counseling and Psychology, in which she completed her Master’s Degree, Kathleen’s art education continued as she took night classes and intensive workshops in painting and fine art. Her studies eventually led her to train in Art Therapy as she joined her Counseling skills and her passion for art. She now works as a full-time artist, but her background as a therapist greatly influences her work. She infuses each of her pieces with emotion and uses art as a vehicle for expression. Her landscapes convey to the viewer her connection to the beauty and intensity of the coastline, her main source of inspiration. She uses color, texture and bold paint application to demonstrate not just the beauty and the ever-changing moods of the landscape, but the shifting perspective of the artist herself. Painting for Kathleen is a mode of self-expression, a way to form a deeper connection with others and the natural world. It is also a tool for healing- for both the artist and the viewer.
Kathleen works primarily in oil and mixed media. Her style may be described as Contemporary Impressionism, with strong expressive and abstract influences.

Many local residents know David as a third-generation boat builder, who, for some thirty years crafted one-of-a-kind pleasure boats, and the locally-famous Monty Cat fish boats. What few knew was that David was also a fine artist, equally skilled in the mediums of charcoal and paint. In 2005, David put away his boat building tools and decided to become a full-time painter. Now instead of painting boat bottoms, David paints boats on canvas, often they are the very boats he built. David also is a gifted portrait artist, praised for capturing a likeliness, as well as for portraying something of the character and personality of his sitter.

Scott began his journey as a furniture maker and designer. In 2006, he crafted the first Circa Chair—and since then, nearly 200 unique pieces have followed. These chairs have become a space for unbounded creativity, offering a freedom not often found in more structured projects. Each one is guided by the character of the wood itself; rather than following a fixed blueprint, the design evolves organically, shaped by the material’s grain, texture, and story. Every Circa Chair is a one-of-a-kind creation, signed, dated, and numbered. Scott uses a wide range of wood—from freshly milled timbers to 200-year-old reclaimed planks, and even whimsical materials like antique board games. Most are built using traditional through mortise and tenon joinery and finished with a durable varnish for longevity. These chairs are not only functional works of art—they’re made to last, to be used, and to be passed on to future generations.

Early in his life, Paul picked up his mother’s interests in artistic activities. He had formal academic instruction at the Visual Arts Center of Harvard University. Over his life, he has worked in a variety of two- and three-dimensional media, traditional and contemporary. In recent years, he has taken up oil painting and stone carving. The raw sculptural material includes marble, slate and granite, originating from quarries of bedrock in Vermont and New Hampshire, as well as loose surface stone. Of particular interest is rock from the Newbury Volcanic Complex, formed during the ancient Paleozoic Era and much more recently spread southward by the Laurentide Glacier. The molten stone often crystalized in dramatic stripes and swirls of different materials, examples of which are widely strewn over the ground in Ipswich and nearby areas today.

Fletcher Ian Potter is a part time photographer who has been learning the craft since 2017. His curiosity for understanding how things work has driven both his full-time career as an engineer and interest in using a camera as the tool of his art. Having enjoyed learning to work with his camera so much Fletcher decided to learn how to do his own printing. “There’s something special about seeing your work as a tangible item instead of on a screen. Artist Glenn Roundy of Hamilton, Massachusetts creatively transforms sheet metal, wire and often found objects into captivating mobiles and abstract sculptures. Intrigued by the works of Alexander Calder, Glenn started experimenting with mobiles out of curiosity and his works quickly became gifts for family and friends. Self-taught, his work continues to evolve exploring the tension between balance and freedom of movement. Glenn experiments with scale, balance, space, and subject matter to create truly unique pieces. The shadows cast by the movement of his mobiles create evocative displays nearly as interesting as the pieces themselves. His lifelong love of nature is reflected in his works which often incorporate ocean and plant life into his delightful designs. His work has been sold at Essex County Greenbelt’s Art in the Barn, Monserrat’s Artrageous annual fund raiser, and the Crane Estate Art Show & Sale.

Gary was born and raised in rural Indiana on a farm where his appreciation for nature was born. From painting and photography projects in 4-H, and building elaborate hay forts in the barn, Gary’s interest in art and design led him to architecture school where he developed a taste for adventure and had a chance to travel. From the Midwest to the West Coast, New England, and beyond, he’s lived and worked in a variety of urban and rural contexts. Gary moved to Manchester-by-the-Sea in 2010 and fell in love with a crumbling mid-century modern Acorn Deck House, which he and his husband Daniel are (slowly) restoring. The abundance and variety of spectacular natural settings across Cape Ann inspired Gary to rediscover his artwork; much of his current work features local scenes and animals that live nearby. “I received my BFA from Mass. College of Art in 1993. While there, I studied with George Nick and Jo Sandman, among other influential artists. Since graduating, I have shown my work in numerous exhibits in and around the Boston area. In addition to exhibiting my work, I accept commissions and am especially interested in public art projects and murals. Lately, my painting has focused more on surface quality and paint texture than on subject. I have been exploring impasto, stains and washes, varnishes and waxes. With subject, I am drawn to negative spaces and strive to give substance to those voids through the use of color, texture, and contrasting sheen, as I continue to be inspired by the snippets and corners of commonplace domestic vignettes.”

Self-taught and always learning, Jeff finds it humbling when people say they love his pieces, but when they discover the artwork is made from old tools and antique metals, that’s the fun part. Taking a forgotten piece of trash, no longer deemed useful, and forming it into a sculpture to be seen ad enjoyed by many is satisfying. Giving new life to discarded metal is just one part of the process Picking though piles of scrap metal destined to be melted down, searching for finds at flea market or yard sales, or simply the side of the road, the hunt and the creation is all about the shape. Finding those pieces with interesting or odd shapes is like finding treasure.
