About "From the High Hills, They Strained Their Eyes": 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution

Step back in time at Ward Reservation to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution as local historian and storyteller Jane Cairns brings to life the stirring day in June 1775 when Andover residents climbed Holt Hill, the town’s highest vantage point, to glimpse the smoke and fire of the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Enjoy your own picnic and hear an engaging talk that weaves together the broader historical significance of the battle with personal stories of Andover’s involvement—how its soldiers marched, fought, and returned, and how their families and neighbors rallied with provisions, support, and resolve. Drawing on diary entries, letters, and historic accounts, Jane will share stories of Holt Farm daughter Polly Holt Farnum, wife of Capt. Benjamin Farnum; soldier James Stevens, home on furlough because of sickness; Regimental Line Officer Col. James Frye; freedman and sharpshooter Salem Poor; and others.

“From the High Hills, They Strained Their Eyes” is a quote from early Andover historian and teacher Sarah Loring Bailey (1834-1896) whose love of history and language highlights keeping the history of the community alive.

A Trustees staff member will lead participants from the parking lot up to the top of Holt Hill for a guided hike for the lecture. This hike is appropriate for beginners. From the parking lot to the top of Holt Hill is a slight to moderate incline. The total trail is approximately 2 miles from to start to finish and will take participants about 20 minutes to the top of the hill.

Please dress appropriately with proper footware and bring bug spray. Beverages and snacks will be provided but all participants should bring a picnic lunch and follow our carry in, carry out trash policy.
