About Olmsted's Moraine Farm Lecture and Guided Tour

Explore the history and future of Moraine Farm, Frederick Law Olmsted’s earliest residential landscape in Beverly, MA and significant Trustee’s property. Moraine Farm was Olmsted’s first master plan for residential country seat and represents a laboratory for ideas that would reach their apotheosis in the Vanderbilt estate in North Carolina, Biltmore. Owned by the same family for generations, Moraine Farm is an exceptionally beautiful landscape now under the stewardship of The Trustees, the oldest and largest land conservation and preservation organization in Massachusetts. Founded in 1891, The Trustees served as a model for the National Trust in England formed four years later. Despite its substantial experience in preservation and public stewardship, the project to preserve and open Moraine Farm presents unique challenges as well as opportunities. This program offers a rare behind the scenes look at a major American landscape project in its earliest stage led by key players in the project.

The day includes a lecture and in-depth tour followed by lunch on site. It will be hosted by staff members of The Trustees overseeing this ambitious project to restore and open this significant historical property to the public, including Cindy Brockway Senior Managing Director of Cultural Resources , Pilar Garro, Property Director, and Jeremy Dick, Senior Stewardship Manager for the North Shore. Registration includes free admission to other Trustee’s owned public gardens including Long Hill in Beverly, MA (10 minutes away) and Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens in North Andover (30 minutes away). Make it a weekend getaway in New England!

The program is in partnership with The Garden Conservancy. The mission of the Garden Conservancy is to preserve, share, and celebrate America’s gardens and diverse gardening traditions for the education and inspiration of the public.
