Nathan Hutto

Chief People and Culture Officer, The Trustees

Nathan Hutto is The Trustees’ first Chief People and Culture Officer. In this role, Nathan leads strategies that strengthen The Trustees’ team, build an inclusive and welcoming culture, enhance structure and operations, and position The Trustees as an employer of choice within non-profit and conservation communities.

Nathan is deeply aligned with The Trustees’ mission to protect special places and connect people to those special places and has been a Trustees’ member for many years. Over the past 20 years he has enjoyed spending time with his family at Trustees’ properties hiking, trail running, camping, swimming, or just spending time in our special places. Throughout Nathan’s career he has been dedicated to fostering inclusive work environments where colleagues feel valued, respected, and supported.

This commitment includes building strategies to actively recruit and retain a diverse workforce, implementing inclusive policies and practices, developing diversity trainings, actively listening to and amplifying diverse voices, and promoting equity. Nathan brings significant expertise and experience in designing values-based pay models, including designing one of the leading pay models in the international development sector and co-founding the Pay Equity Collective.

Nathan has spent years in operational and leadership roles across the social sector, including economic development, public health, education, and social services. Prior to joining The Trustees, Nathan was the Chief People Officer at LabCentral, a non-profit life sciences incubator. Nathan also served as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief People Officer at Last Mile Health, a global health non-profit that partners with governments to build and scale community health systems across Africa. Nathan brings significant international experience, including serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Turkmenistan, leading humanitarian programming in post-conflict Kosovo, and supporting operations across several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Nathan earned a PhD in Social Policy Analysis from Columbia University, where he studied disparities in maternal and child health. He also earned a Master of Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
