Elizabeth Freeman StoryWalk®

About Elizabeth Freeman StoryWalk®

Celebrate Elizabeth Freeman Day with a special Storybook Walk featuring the book, “Mumbet’s Declaration of Independence” by Gretchen Woelfle, honoring the life and legacy of Elizabeth Freeman, the first enslaved woman in Massachusetts to successfully sue for her freedom.

As you stroll along the Garden-to-Garden trail, families and visitors of all ages can enjoy a beautifully illustrated story that shares Freeman’s remarkable journey, courage, and lasting impact on the fight for freedom and equality. At each stop along the path, discover pages of the story while enjoying the natural beauty of the landscape.

This self-guided experience offers a meaningful way to reflect on local history, learn about an extraordinary woman who helped shape Massachusetts, and inspire conversations about justice, perseverance, and human rights.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Closer to Beverly? You can also enjoy this Storywalk® at Long Hill, happening August 17-23.

This is a free event. No registration necessary.
