About Mission House Guided Tour

New England’s Colonial history—from the perspective of the colonists as well as the indigenous peoples who preceded them—comes alive inside the home to the first missionary to the Mohicans. This National Historic Landmark was originally built around 1742 by the Rev. John Sergeant, the first missionary to the Mohican people. Before that, Sergeant lived in a modest cabin among the Mohicans, who allowed the young minister to settle in western Massachusetts in the 1730s. After marrying Abigail Williams, he constructed what we now know as the Mission House.

Originally perched on Prospect Hill in Stockbridge, the house was carefully taken apart, moved, and restored to its current location between 1926 and 1930 by preservationist Mabel Choate—also the owner of nearby Naumkeag.
