About Weathering the Winter: An Interactive Walk

As temperatures drop, every aspect of the farm prepares for winter. Join our ranger and our farmer for this special interactive walk to learn how Chestnut Hill Farm – the cultivated fields and the woodlands surrounding them – prepare for and survive the winter.

You’ll join our expert guide, Tim Puopolo, a Trustees ranger and naturalist, and recipient of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s “Outstanding Park Interpreter” award, to learn about winter strategies and how everything in nature decides if they’re going to leave for the season, sleep through the season, die off, or tough it out for the season.

Then, our own Farmer, Erin Espinosa, will show you how we close our fields for the winter using cover crops, mulches, compost, and amendments to maintain soil microbial activity and protect soil from erosion. She will discuss what farmers do this time of year to prepare for the next season, including crop planning, planting bulb crops like garlic, and conducting soil tests. I can take a few soil samples with participants.

In observance of Veteran’s Day, Veterans may request a complimentary ticket by contacting us at chestnuthillfarm@thetrustees.org

Please note, though we love dogs, they are not permitted at Chestnut Hill Farm.
