About Appleton Culinary Workshop: Ayurvedic Cooking for Vitality

Avurveda is an alternative medicine system with roots in India and Nepal.

To truly teach sustained cooking practices, we will work loosely with recipes as guidance to encourage intuition, inventing, supplementing, substituting, so cooking at home becomes a joyful daily practice without inhibition or reservation.

We will experiment with how to bring a variety of prepared eating experiences made with common foods already in circulation in your kitchen. The purpose of the class in not to prepare one meal or dish but to prepare a host of items that will enable the creation of multiple meals. Class will include discussions on how to properly store, then mix, match and enhance throughout the week with what we created!

Each Class will highlight approximately a half dozen healthy in season ingredients (protein, vegetable, herb, fat, fruit, fiber) complimented by the common items stocked in a kitchen. We will focus on themed seasonally and locally selected sourced ingredients to create a wonderful array of healthful, vitality promoting anti-inflammatory dishes that are simple and easy to recreate over and over at home. The goal is to promote wellbeing and vitality through at home cooking which needs to be manageable and joyful to remain a consistent practice in your daily life.

Kate Gilmore is an Integrative Nutrition and Ayurvedic practitioner, (company name: bluewater). These practices prescribe food as medicine- along with specific preparation techniques for optimal body absorption, nutrition and function. Kate attended the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City under Nick Malgieri. She has enjoyed working in kitchens in Boston, Washington DC, New York City and Cape Cod. In addition, she has managed (and cooked) at bakeries in SoHo, NYC and Chatham, Massachusetts and managed a food operation in Faneuil Hall, Boston. However, it is in home cooking where she has thrived. Kate has been married to a 25-year vegetarian, has an anaphylactic severe food allergies son, and all four in the family are accomplished lifelong athletes requiring targeted nutrition. This combination requires attention to detail for each and every meal. This daily challenge has become a joy to navigate and is where she has developed as an inventor and creator.
