About CraneExplorer: It’s a Wild Life! Cold Weather Feathers

Come explore the world of our resident winter birds here at Crane—beyond the Snowy Owl! Bring your binoculars (or borrow ours!) and join us in searching the water for Loons, Long-Tail ducks, Eiders, Scoters, Mergansers, and more! In the trees and sky, we might spot birds of prey, including owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles, alongside hardy songbirds and woodpeckers. A variety of shorebirds round out the viewing possibilities! How do these birds stay warm, find food, and otherwise survive our chilly winters? We’ll learn about bird identification techniques, anatomy, and adaptations, and how to use field guides and birding apps available to anyone with a smartphone.

CraneExplorer events are family-friendly programs welcoming learners of all ages. These hikes and interactive education programs cover less ground to accommodate smaller strides and have more frequent stops to look, listen, and learn from our CraneExplorer guides. Interactive education programs include hands-on activities to engage our curiosity.

Please be aware that we do walk the full two hours and cover approximately 1-2 miles. As such, adult discretion on your child’s ability to manage this activity is advised. A scope or binoculars is a must; loaner pairs are available on a limited basis.

Group tickets grant admission to 2-3 adults or up to 5 adults and children. If your group exceeds these limits, please purchase additional tickets. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
