Clay on the Wheel Workshop

About Cancelled – Clay On the Wheel, Friday mornings with Mary Henderson, June-July 2022

5 Friday mornings, June 17, 24, July 1, 8, and 15, 10-1PM

A multi-week intensive in the art and skills of creating with clay on the pottery wheel. 4 weeks are dedicated to the basics and the purely functional, with demonstrations and forays into the whimsical and sculptural side of the art, for added inspiration! Focal points will include mastering centering and opening clay on the wheel, building your throwing skills pulling and stretching the clay to functional limits, and exploring the array of artful and useful forms you can expand upon as your skills grow. A 5th class will be dedicated to glazing your creations for enjoyment at home!

· Three weekly hours of demonstration and instruction in wheel throwing and glazing, from 10 am-1 pm, Friday mornings, June 17, 24, July 1, 8, and 15.

· Studio equipment, processes and materials available include: electric wheels, slab roller, hand extruder, glazing spray booth, hot box for fast drying of clay, electric kiln firing (cone 5 and low temperatures), gas kiln firing (cone 10 reduction and low fire saggar), raku firing, cone 10 stoneware clay and porcelain, and over 1000 glaze, ceramic color, and effective combinations to choose from. Communal wheel and hand tools for hand-building and wheel work are provided. Participants are invited to bring their own tools, clay aprons, and towels as desired.

· Optional open studio time packages can be purchased to continue developing your work and skills on your own.

· Individual guidance with personally-designed projects. Discussion of relevant art and ceramics history, and functional concerns for ceramic work, whether it be for use inside the home or outside.

Firing fees are calculated by volume of the work-to-be-fired, for each firing, and will be charged at the end of the course. Firing fees include all material costs.

Some inter-pandemic studio safety measures are still implemented: wheel workstations are protected by sneeze screens and distancing measures are still encouraged. Class sizes are still reduced to optimize spacing of persons at all times inside the studio. Mask-wearing is not required for vaccinated individuals inside the studio, but strongly encouraged for the unvaccinated.

Workshops are offered consecutively during the year for those engaged in longer-term projects or skill-building. Storage for in-process projects is provided. Although clay will not permanently stain garments, workwear appropriate to a studio environment is recommended.

All levels welcome. No ceramic experience necessary. Ages 16+.

Cancellation Policy: A $50 non-refundable registration fee is included, if you decide not to take the class before it begins. We are not able to issue refunds for workshops missed by the student once the class has started.

Every effort will be made to make up classes postponed by unforseen event. Students are asked to reserve time for such postponed classes and to familiarize themselves with our notification protocols posted inside the studio.
