About Guided Garden Tour at Naumkeag

Mabel Choate inherited Naumkeag in 1929, and for the next 30 years worked with landscape architect Fletcher Steele to create the magnificent gardens for which Naumkeag is now known, including the world-famous Blue Steps. The story of Naumkeag and its spectacular gardens come to life as you stroll the grounds on a 45-minute guided tour with one of our veteran tour guides.

Please dress appropriately for the weather, including waterproof clothing and footwear.

Pre-registration required. Register for the garden tour when you buy your general admission ticket. The option will come up as an “add-on” purchase after you select the date of your visit. Purchase your general admission ticket here!

What You Need to Know-

 PARKING AND ARRIVAL: You will be asked to provide proof of admission for the designated date/time, either through presentation of printed/mobile ticket, or by name.

CANCELLATIONS/ REFUNDS: Tickets are non-refundable.

DATE/TIME CHANGES: At this time, we are unable to accommodate requests for date or time change. If space allows, we will honor unused tickets from other dates/times at the gatehouse.

FAQ:

How long is the walk around the property? Typically, visitors spend approximately 1-2 hours exploring the gardens and grounds, the guided garden tour is approximately an hour long.

Is the property handicapped accessible? Due to the age of the site, Naumkeag is not ADA compliant. There are many stairs, a steep hillside, uneven footing, etc. However, we do have accessible parking spaces at the front of the house, an accessible bathroom and many parts of the garden and first floor of the house can be seen regardless of mobility issues. Can I bring my dog? In order to protect the gardens, dogs are not allowed on the property at any time.

What should I do if I am running late? Please arrive during designated time, however, if running late, provide proof of admission at the gate, and if space allows, you will be granted entrance.

Will there be food or drink for sale? Can I bring my own? Light snacks and drinks will be sold on site. You may bring your own.

Is the gift shop open? Yes, our gift shop is located on the first floor of the house.

Will there be restrooms available? Yes.

Will the interior of the house be open? Yes. The first floor of the house will be open to self-guided interpretation. The second and third floor of the house will remain closed until further notice.

How long can I stay? Once on the property, guests are welcome to stay as long as desired until our 4PM closing time.
