About Sensory-Friendly Open Barnyard

Welcome to Sensory-Friendly Open Barnyard at Weir River Farm!

This program offers a dedicated hour for families with disabilities, providing a reduced number of guests and quieter sensory friendly environment. Any family that would benefit from a limited capacity visit is welcome.

During the Sensory-Friendly Open Barnyard series, you’ll have the opportunity to experience life on one of the last working farms on the South Shore. In the barnyard, meet our ponies, llama, and potbellied pig. Have a chance to interact with our goats, sheep, and chickens. See if you can find our herd of black and white belted Galloway cattle in their pastures. On your way down to the barnyard, enjoy the beautiful StoryWalk™.

During this program, the barnyard is closed to the general public and headcount is limited. Pre-registration is required for this event. Children 2 and under are free.

Resources available to prepare for your visit include a Social Story Guide available online, here. A special sensory kit and visual story guide are available in the barnyard. You may borrow noise-reducing headphones and sensory items from the staff in the barnyard for easier access during your visit. Please note that we have a limited number of sensory kits and headphones available and strongly encourage participants to bring anything they expect to need.

Please contact South Shore Engagement Manager, Elyssa Scheck, at weirriver@thetrustees.org, with any questions or special requests.

This program is rain or shine! In the event of cancellation, you will be notified via the email address you used to register and refunded in full within 14 business days.

What is an Autism Welcoming Business?

Autism Welcoming businesses make simple, but impactful accommodations to support individuals and families with autism. They are trained by Autism Alliance staff and partner together to create a supportive environment. Together, we are creating a welcoming and universal accessibility community, leading to an increased quality and socially inclusive life for families and their loved ones with autism. Having neighborhood businesses that care creates a new culture and stronger community for all. Learn more about the Autism Welcoming Initiative here.

Please Note: With the confirmation of the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Massachusetts, we are taking necessary precautions to protect visitors and our flocks. Although risk of transmission to humans is low, out of an abundance of caution, we are asking that staff only enter our poultry spaces. Thank you for understanding.
