Do you love to draw? Are you amazed by the wonders of the natural world? Join us at Weir River Farm for a new workshop for elementary age children and their caregivers inspired by local naturalist Polly Thayer Starr. Like many artists, Polly practiced close observation of the natural world to produce her unique works of art. From her painting studio in Hingham, now the Weir River Farm classroom, Polly spent time studying, sketching and drawing plants and animals from the farm and its surrounding fields. We’ll look at sketches and drawings by other scientist/artists like Maria Merian and Leonardo DaVinci, and then we’ll head out to the trails to explore, finding our own natural objects to draw.
This art and nature session is geared toward elementary age children and their caregivers. Participants will be encouraged to use the power of close observation to produce art with special attention to detail. Materials will include graphite and charcoal on paper. Bring your sketch pad or journal and favorite pencils, or use our supplies.
Participants will meet outside The Studio, 140 Turkey Hill Lane. Parking is located in the lot across across the street, adjacent to the Community Garden.
This event is held entirely outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, class will be cancelled and the registration fee refunded. Participants will be notified via the email you provided with your registration.Register
