About Naumkeag Historic House and Garden: Self-guided tour

Naumkeag is a quintessential country estate of the Gilded Age, known for its stunning architecture, delightful gardens, and panoramic views. Designed by McKim, Mead, and White as the summer home of the Choate family, Naumkeag offers breathtaking views of Monument Mountain and the surrounding hills. Visitors to Naumkeag may stroll the Evergreen Garden and Linden Allee as well as many delightful gardens created by Mabel Choate and Fletcher Steele, among them the Afternoon, Rose, and Chinese Gardens. The first floor of the house will also be open for self-guided tours.

TIMED ENTRANCE

To prevent overcrowding, tickets will be sold per person and based on a 1-hour arrival window with limited capacity. Please select tickets based on when you would like to arrive at the grounds. One ticket required per person.

Guests are welcome to remain on the grounds for as long as desired – visits are NOT limited to a one hour duration.

Please note that guided garden tours are available Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, and 1:00 pm. Space is limited and pre-registration is required, so please click here to select your date for a Guided Garden Tour!

What You Need to Know

PARKING AND ARRIVAL: You will be asked to provide proof of admission for the designated date/time, either through presentation of printed/mobile ticket, or by name.

CANCELLATIONS/ REFUNDS: Tickets are non-refundable.

DATE/TIME CHANGES: At this time, we are unable to accommodate requests for date or time change. If space allows, we will honor unused tickets from other dates/times at the gatehouse.

FAQ:

How long is the walk around the property? Typically, visitors spend approximately 1-2 hours exploring the gardens and grounds.

Is the property handicapped accessible? Due to the age of the site, Naumkeag is not ADA compliant. There are many stairs, a steep hillside, uneven footing, etc. However, we do have accessible parking spaces at the front of the house, an accessible bathroom and many parts of the garden and first floor of the house can be seen regardless of mobility issues. Can I bring my dog? In order to protect the gardens, dogs are not allowed on the property at any time.

What should I do if I am running late? Please arrive during designated time, however, if running late, provide proof of admission at the gate, and if space allows, you will be granted entrance.

Will there be food or drink for sale? Can I bring my own? There will be light refreshments provided at our outdoor concessions stand. You may also bring your own food and drinks.

Is the gift shop open? There will be a small pop up shop located on the first floor of the house.

Will there be restrooms available? Yes.

Will the interior of the house be open? Yes. The first floor of the house will be open to self-guided interpretation. The second and third floor of the house will remain closed.
