CraneExplorer Hike: Shipwreck Scholars Hit the Bea...

About CraneExplorer Hike: Shipwreck Scholars Hit the Beach

This event has sold out.

CraneExplorer events are designed to appeal to the little ones* while giving their parents a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Crane Estate. These hikes cover less ground to accommodate smaller strides and have more frequent stops to look, listen, and learn from our CraneOutdoors guides. Not just a walk in the woods, these family-friendly experiences teach kids and delight adults by exploring the wonder of our coastal habitats and the rich history of the Crane Estate.

There is something magical about a shipwreck and the mysteries of the past it brings to mind. The shipwreck of the Ada K. Damon was a staple on Steep Hill Beach for over 100 years, having run aground there on December 26th, 1909 and subsequently buried by the shifting sands. Then, one fateful day in 2020, a storm scoured the sands away, revealing her to the elements. Later that year, another storm broke her up and parts of her are now sprinkled all over this less explored, but no less beautiful part of the Crane Estate.

This hike will have guests hitting the beach and adventuring into the past to discover how we came to know the Ada K. Damon and what events led up to her destruction. Join us in the exploration of this magical wreck and its history at Steep Hill Beach.

Highlights include:

  • Walking to the western-most part of the Crane Estate, Cedar Point
  • Collecting shells on the beach
  • Exploration of the Ada K. Damon shipwreck and Steep Hill Beach
