Work-From-Home Ceramics

Ceramic Sculpture Workshop

About Work-From-Home Ceramics

During the entire month of September, join us for a new at home deCordova ceramic workshop. This is a ceramic sculpture workshop for the unrealized or developing artist, homeowner, or design aficionado looking to enhance indoor or outdoor spaces with one’s own ceramic installations or art.

Workshop cost includes:

  • 25 lbs. of reduction stoneware from Amherst Potters Supply (pick up date is Tuesday, September 1st between 11 am-2 pm)
  • Two, 4-hour outdoor glazing sessions on September 16th and 27th (for glazing work including instructor consultation)
  • Firing services (separate firing fees will apply and be invoiced to you)
  • Recommendations and links for ordering clay tools if needed

Glazing Sessions*:

Wednesday, September 16th, 1:30-5:30 pm and Sunday, September 27th, 10 am-2 pm.

Tools and materials for decorating your work will be provided during outdoor glazing sessions. Glazing sessions can also serve as pick-up/ drop-off times.

Firing fees: are charged by volume, 3 cents per cubic inch, for each firing in the kilns, which will be compiled by the studio manager and invoiced for payment by credit card. Students commonly accumulate $30-45 in firing fees in a given month’s work.

Please note: Although clay won’t permanently stain garments, participants are advised to wear suitable work garments while working with clay and glazes. Do not wash clay into household plumbing.

All levels welcome. Prior experience working with deCordova Ceramics is helpful and preferred, although verbal orientation to starting with clay, as well as to deCordova’s systems, facilities, and materials will be provided to new students during pick-ups, drop-offs, and glazing sessions.

At home workshops will continue on a monthly basis in October and November.

*Outdoor glazing sessions will be held in a gated area adjacent to the ceramic studio. Work surfaces, tables and chairs will be provided for glaze work and for dropping off for firing. Canopies will be set up for mild inclement weather. A disinfecting station will be available and supplied outdoors. Bringing your own hand disinfectant is also encouraged. Courtyard public restrooms will be available for use, and are disinfected by Park staff regularly. Social distancing and proper mask-wearing must be followed at all times in the vicinity of the outdoor glaze session.
