Kayak Adventure on The Castle Neck River

About Kayak Adventure on The Castle Neck River

One of the best was to enjoy the natural beauty of Boston’s North Shore is kayaking the placid waters of The Great Marsh—the largest continuous stretch of Salt Marsh in New England, extending from Cape Ann to New Hampshire. The Castle Neck peninsula on Crane Estate is one of the largest barrier beaches that protect the tidal estuaries of the Great Marsh. Running along its back side is the Castle Neck River, an excellent location for paddlers of all skill levels to explore these waters.

This intimate kayak tour offers the perfect vantage point to observe the unique environment of the salt marsh and the wildlife that calls it home. Keep your eyes peeled for herons, egrets, and other shore birds – with luck we’ll spot an osprey hunting among the grasses! Depending on the wind/tide conditions on the day of the trip, destinations may include a beach landing on Castle Neck or one of the various islands in the Crane Wildlife Refuge.

Please note: Participants must be competent swimmers and age 15 or older. While appropriate for all levels of kayak skill, this trip can be physically demanding. For each guest, we provide a sit-on-top kayak, a paddle, and a personal floatation device (a.k.a., PFD or “life-vest”). If you would prefer a tandem boat, please contact us about availability. You are also welcome to bring your own equipment. If you’d like to do so, please purchase your reservation and then email Victoria Sindorf at with a brief description of the equipment you’d like to bring (e.g., 14’ sit-in kayak, paddle, PFD). Use of personal equipment is contingent on approval by Trustees staff and signing of liability waiver.

Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible and issued full refunds.

The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and boat trips will be emailed to registrants before the event at the address provided upon registration. Please note that registration closes 3 hours before the start of the event and we will not be able to accomodate walk-ins or on-site sales. Thank you for understanding.
