Sunset Kayak in the Crane Wildlife Refuge

Kayaking Toward Choate Island at Sunset

About Sunset Kayak in the Crane Wildlife Refuge

There are few places on the North Shore that more reliably enjoy spectacular sunsets than the back side of Crane Beach, overlooking Essex Bay.

On this kayak outing into the heart of Essex Bay, we will be paddling in the protected waters of the Crane Wildlife Refuge, part of the Great Marsh—New England’s largest contiguous salt marsh. We’ll either paddle around Choate Island or down the Castle Neck River, depending on wind/tide conditions on the day of the event.

Along the way, we’ll observe the wide variety of marsh wildlife found in here, including egrets, herons, and other shore birds.

Please note: Participants must be competent swimmers and age 15 or older. While appropriate for all levels of kayak skill, this trip can be physically demanding. For each guest, we provide a sit-on-top kayak, a paddle, and a personal floatation device (a.k.a., PFD or “life-vest”). If you would prefer a tandem boat, please contact us about availability. You are also welcome to bring your own equipment. If you’d like to do so, please purchase your reservation and then email Victoria Sindorf at with a brief description of the equipment you’d like to bring (e.g., 14’ sit-in kayak, paddle, PFD). Use of personal equipment is contingent on approval by Trustees staff and signing of liability waiver.

Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible and issued full refunds.

The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and boat trips will be emailed to registrants before the event at the address provided upon registration. Please note that registration closes 3 hours before the start of the event and we will not be able to accomodate walk-ins or on-site sales. Thank you for understanding.
