Kayaking to Choate Island

About One Seat Available! – Kayak to Choate Island

Circumnavigating an island is one of the great rewards of kayaking. Reaching the summit of a hill that offers a great view is one of the payoffs of a good hike. This adventure in the Crane Wildlife Refuge offers an opportunity to do both of these things in one outing.

We’ll paddle around three islands, the largest of which—Choate (formerly Hog) Island—supports myriad birds and mammals including deer, fisher, coyote, and otter. We’ll land there and pause for a rest on the lawn of the Choate family homestead.

Then we’ll stretch our legs by taking a short hike to the highest point on the island and burial site for Cornelius Crane and his wife, Miné. From this hilltop, we’ll enjoy views of the tide marsh that interconnects all three islands and the historic buildings that sit on them, including the c.1778 Proctor Barn, the c.1725-40 Choate House, and the White Cottage—Cornelius and Miné’s private getaway when they were alive.

Please note: Participants must be competent swimmers and age 15 or older. While appropriate for all levels of kayak skill, this trip can be physically demanding. For each guest, we provide a sit-on-top kayak, a paddle, and a personal floatation device (a.k.a., PFD or “life-vest”). If you would prefer a tandem boat, please contact us about availability. You are also welcome to bring your own equipment. If you’d like to do so, please purchase your reservation and then email Victoria Sindorf at vsindorf@thetrustees.org with a brief description of the equipment you’d like to bring (e.g., 14’ sit-in kayak, paddle, PFD). Use of personal equipment is contingent on approval by Trustees staff and signing of liability waiver.

Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible and issued full refunds.

The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and boat trips will be emailed to registrants before the event at the address provided upon registration. Please note that registration closes 3 hours before the start of the event and we will not be able to accomodate walk-ins or on-site sales. Thank you for understanding.
