Q: Why are The Trustees implementing a parking pass system right now at certain sites?

A: We know that our members and visitors are anxious to get back out to enjoy some of our most popular reservations, and we’re very keen to make that happen. Having a touch-free entry experience will help keep our staff and visitors safer. Because state guidance asks us to enforce social distancing rules, and in some cases limit capacity to half the normal volume (e.g. beach properties), we want to manage the expectations of visitors before they leave home about whether or not there will be space to park. This will also help us to avoid unpleasant and potentially dangerous traffic situations around these sites.

Q: How do I reserve or purchase my tickets/parking passes?

A: You can reserve your passes by visiting this page. Simply choose the site you’d like to visit and then select the date and time to reserve your parking pass to arrive during the specific time window, or for the full day, depending on the property. Parking passes are free of charge for Members at Castle Hill, Fruitlands, deCordova, Naumkeag, and World’s End. They are discounted at Crane Beach for Members and free for Crane parking permit holders.

If you’re not a current Member, you can purchase a parking pass at the non-member rate. With a parking pass, non-members can visit Fruitlands, deCordova, Naumkeag, World’s End, Castle Hill and Crane Beach. If you’d like to become a Trustees Member, click here.

Please note that, regardless of Member status, visitors must reserve their parking passes online ahead of time. The pass should be affixed to the car window or displayed on a phone or similar device when entering the property or being checked in at a property’s gate. For the health and safety of our staff, there will be no transactions in person at the property. Visitors who do not have a parking pass will be not be allowed to enter.

Q: The date I want to come is sold out online. Can I purchase tickets when I get there?

A: For the safety of our staff, parking passes will not be sold on-site at this time. Please reserve them online ahead of time in order to secure your spot. If passes are sold out for a given day, please select another date to visit.

Q: How far in advance can I book a parking pass?

A: Currently, parking passes are available about 2-3 weeks in advance. Crane Beach passes are released every Monday and Thursday at noon.

Q: How many days of parking passes can I reserve at once?

A: We are requesting that visitors only book one visit per release period.

We are limiting the number of available tickets in order to control the numbers of people at Crane Beach at any point in time. If you don’t use your ticket, we lose the opportunity to offer it to another visitor, and we know that so many people want to visit Crane Beach this summer. Please don’t book tickets that you can’t use, and if you know you can’t make it, please return your ticket as soon as possible so that we can offer it to another visitor.

We will be monitoring unused tickets to ensure that abuse is not happening. Parties who continually do not show up on their bookings may be denied the ability to make further bookings.

Q: I’m not planning on driving. Do I still need a parking pass?

A: At Fruitlands, Naumkeag, Castle Hill, and World’s End, pedestrians and cyclists will need a parking pass no matter how you arrive at the property. At deCordova and Crane Beach, Member pedestrians and bicyclists who show a valid membership card may enter for free. There will be a dedicated machine at Crane Beach where Non-member pedestrians and bicyclists must pay a $5 fee by credit card only, with no receipt. Those riding bicycles to Crane Beach can use the bike rack near the bath house behind the Exit Garage. No more than 100 bicyclists and pedestrians will be allowed per day at each property.

Q: I purchased a parking pass, but now I can’t go. Can I cancel my pass and get a refund or exchange for a different day?

A: Unfortunately, unless we cancel the date for any reason, parking passes are non-refundable, and we cannot accommodate requests for a change in date. Please keep this in mind when reserving a parking pass. In the event that The Trustees cancels a particular date, a refund or rebooking will be offered.

Q: For timed ticket sites, do I have to leave when my time window is over?

A: You can stay at most properties (except for Castle Hill) for as long as you want, within operating hours, of course. Typically, visitors spend 1-2 hours exploring these sites. Castle Hill has 3-hour tickets, and we ask leave when your time slot is done.

Q: Do I and/or my family need to wear face coverings even if we can stay six feet away from others?

A: Yes, in keeping with the Governor’s order, all visitors over the age of two (with exceptions for medical reasons) are required to bring and wear a face covering at all Trustees properties. The only exceptions are at Crane Beach for visitors swimming or settled on their spot at the beach (i.e., “toweling”).

We’re trying to make our properties as safe as possible for our visitors and staff. While you may be able to social distance – and we’re doing everything possible to create that environment for you – we cannot guarantee that someone won’t get closer to you than 6 feet. Since we now know that even asymptomatic people can transmit COVID-19, we are doing our best to be thoughtful about reducing the spread of this virus. We may not be available in every moment to enforce this but would ask that you respect and abide by these rules for these reasons.

Q: Will bathrooms be open?

A: For most sites, bathroom facilities will be closed. Bathrooms will be available at Crane Beach where capacity will be closely monitored and facilities cleaned often. At Castle Hill, portable toilets will be available. As responsible stewards of our properties, we ask that you plan accordingly and do not use nature as a bathroom.

Q: Will buildings be open at properties?

A: With the exception of Crane Beach, all buildings at properties will remain closed, even at our properties that are open. At Crane Beach, the bathhouse will be open for toileting only, but changing rooms will not be available per the Governor’s order. We hope to open the beach shop and refreshment stand sometime in June. The Snack Shack and Beach Shop are also open.

Q: Can I bring my dog to the sites that are reopening? Can I let them go off leash?

A: Dogs will be welcome at Fruitlands, deCordova, and World’s End, as well as at most of the unstaffed properties that have reopened. Dogs are not allowed at Crane Beach between April 1 and September 30. Dogs are never allowed at Naumkeag and Castle Hill, and that remains true. For the safety of our visitors during the COVID-19 crisis, on properties where dogs are allowed, we are requiring that all dogs be kept on leash and away from other visitors at all times. Prior to closing the properties in March, we received many reports of dogs approaching visitors on the trails, and we realize that this is particularly unsafe during these times. We also continue to ask that visitors with dogs clean up after them and remove all waste from the properties. With no staffing at some of our open sites, it will be more important than ever that our visitors are responsible stewards of these special places.

FOR CRANE BEACH

We are pleased to reopen Crane Beach in a controlled manner that will limit overcrowding, better ensure social distancing, and keep both visitors and staff safe by staying aligned with the all of the relevant Governor’s orders.

Crane Beach will be open with limited capacity, and every visitor, including Crane Beach permit holders and Trustees Members, must reserve a daily parking pass, which is different than a seasonal permit. Daily parking passes will only be available via advance online booking. For the safety of Trustees staff and all visitors, there will be no on-site ticket transactions at this time.

To reserve your daily parking pass, simply click here.  Then choose Crane Beach and select the date and time you’d like to visit. Any vehicles or individuals without a pre-reserved day pass will not be allowed access. To protect the safety of Crane Beach neighbors, we ask that non-pass holders refrain from unnecessary travel on Argilla Road.

Q: If I have a Crane Beach permit, why do I have to book a parking pass?

A: In order to manage crowd size and visitor expectations, we are requiring that ALL entrants to Crane Beach reserve a daily parking pass online in advance. This includes Crane Beach permit holders. Because we are reducing our overall beach capacity to keep visitors and staff safe, we feel this is the best way to plan for and manage beach traffic. Permit holders will continue to be granted free entry to Crane Beach, but the additional daily parking pass will still be required at this time.

Q: What happens when I arrive at the Crane Beach gate?

A: Everyone will be asked to stop and check in with a gate attendant, showing either a printed copy of the parking pass (preferred) or showing the emailed receipt via a cell phone or other device. Names will be checked against a master list. Parties will be allowed one entry per day per pass at this time. For Ipswich residents, staff will check for a valid resident sticker before those vehicles can proceed to the Town parking lot.

Q: Will the bathrooms, refreshment stand, and beach store be open? 

A: Bathroom facilities will be open with significant capacity controls for everyone’s safety. Per the Governor’s order, the changing stalls inside the bathhouse will be closed until further notice. The outdoor showers and water fountains will likewise not be available. The Crane Beach Snack Shack, operated by Fireside Catering, is now open for takeout orders. Order on-site or in advance here. Guests are welcome to bring their own food/drink for consumption on-site. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed. The beach store is open from 9AM to 5PM daily.

Q. I’m not planning on driving to Crane Beach, do I still need a parking pass?

A: Member pedestrians and cyclists who show a valid membership card may enter for free. There will be a dedicated machine where Non-member pedestrians and bicyclists must pay a $5 fee by credit card only, with no receipt. Those riding bicycles can use the bike rack near the bath house behind the Exit Garage. No more than 100 bicyclists and pedestrians will be allowed per day.

Q. Can I drop people off at the gate?

A: No, dropping off people at the gate is not permitted, including Uber/Ride share.

Q: Will lifeguards be on duty at Crane?

A: We will have lifeguards on duty from 8AM until 5PM, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Q: Will Castle Hill be open? Can I park there? 

A: Castle Hill is open and can be booked here.

Q: Can I leave and reenter on the same pass in a given day?

A: At this time, we cannot allow more than one entry per parking pass.

Q: Are there any other social distancing requirements at Crane Beach I should be aware of?

A: Per the Governor’s orders, there can be no more than 10 people convening in a group at any time. This includes people “toweling” together or settled in their spot on the beachfront. “Toweling” groups must set up at least 12 feet from other groups.

In addition, our two wooden boardwalks will be one-way only. The eastern boardwalk (all the way to the right when you drive in) will be one way going from the parking lot towards the beach. The central boardwalk (between the east boardwalk and the vehicle access road) will be one way going from the beach back to the parking lot. The benches along the boardwalk will not be available as visitors are asked not to loiter. Likewise, there will be no picnic tables or chairs set up in the vicinity of the bathhouse. The vehicle access ramp, which is the pathway with the blue Mobi-mat, will be two-way, but we will ask visitors to walk single file on either side to allow for 6 feet of distance between streams of traffic.

Permit Holders: Due to the high demand for Crane Beach access, we ask that you only reserve dates for which you definitely plan to visit. If you have a reservation and cannot make it, please email tickets@thetrustees.org with your order number at least 24 hours in advance to cancel your booking so that others may be able to enjoy visiting Crane Beach instead.

Q. I’m not planning on driving to Crane Beach, do I still need a parking pass? / Can I drop people off at the gate?

A: Visitors on foot or bicycles do not need a parking pass and can simply walk up to the gate. Member pedestrians and cyclists who show a valid membership card may enter for free. There will be a dedicated machine where Non-member pedestrians and bicyclists must pay a $5 fee by credit card only, with no receipt. Those riding bicycles can use the bike rack near the bath house behind the Exit Garage. No more than 100 bicyclists and pedestrians will be allowed per day.

Q: Can I bring my dog to Crane Beach?

Q: I’m a resident of the Town of Ipswich. Do I still need to reserve a Trustees daily parking pass to access Crane Beach?

A: Ipswich residents do not need a Trustees parking pass to access the Town’s parking lot or the beachfront at Crane Beach. At the gate, residents will be directed in as usual after displaying their current Town-issued resident windshield sticker.
